When your mouth is healthy, the mucosa-lined soft tissue of the mouth appears smooth and pink. Changes to this tissue often signal the beginning of a pathologic process, such as oral cancer, geographic tongue, median palatal cyst, or hairy tongue. These changes are usually uncomfortable and disfiguring but are not life-threatening in the early stages.

Oral cancer, of course, is life-threatening. Fortunately, there is also a high chance of successful treatment when oral cancer is diagnosed in the earliest stages.
